Sutan Harhara is an Indonesian former footballer who played for Persija and the Indonesian national team in the 1970s, in the full-back position.
In the 1970s, only the strikers, midfielders, and goal keeper became popular players of football in Indonesia. But Sutan Harhara is the exception. He was a boy from Central Jakarta who played as a defender. He was so special that the media didn't want to miss any chance of recording any of his worthy actions. It made him a scarce football player. He is arguably as popular as the famous attackers at that time, for instance Andi Lala, Anjas Asmara, and Iswadi Idris.
His playing was also scarce. As a defender, he is versatile. When he was playing as a libero, he was very good. When he was placed as a right or left back, he was still tough. He liked to come forward, but he didn't forget his duty as guardian of the defense. In fact, in the 1970s, Sutan Harhara was the most important part of Garuda Team's strong security defense.
Another unusual part of Sutan Harhara is his legs. As a player, he is said to be a right footed specialist. It means that the right leg is much better than his left leg. However, he can play well as a right or left back player. His special ability has been known since he was young. Once being transferred from Indonesia Muda to the White Rose in 1973, he immediately attracted the attention of many people. In fact, a great player at that time, Iswadi Idris, had praised him. According to Iswadi, Sutan was one of most talented players.
When he was playing for Jayakarta in the Persija competition, he became one of the stars. He lead the club to get the promotion from Division II to Division I, and eventually rose to the First Division.
He began to defend Persija at the age of 19 years. At that time, he also became part of the team called Indonesia Muda. At its debut in Persija, he could bring the Persija championship in 1971.
Then in 1975, he also managed to bring the Persija championship in the final after a draw against PSMS 1-1.
PSMS Medan is the dream team to win in Indonesia after the union, namely in three consecutive years 1966-1969, while Persija had a team of star players such as Anwar Ujang, Nobon Kayamudin, Risdianto, Iswadi Idris, Subodro, Andi Lala, Anjas Asmara, Andjiek Ali Nurdin, etc..
The final match was quite fierce up until the players got tired. Therefore, in the 40th minute, the referee had to stop the match and both are designated as joint winners.
Sutan isn't only good when he faced against local players. But he is also capable of defeating the world's star player. When Ajax Amsterdam came to Indonesia in 1974, he successfully defeated Sutan Gerth van Zanten. Ajax's star player didn't move. "He is on the left. Because of his difficulty in passing me, he seemed frustrated and then moved to the right. I went against Ajax twice. When defending Persija a 1-1 draw, and when defending the Caps lost 1-2," recalled Sutan.
Sutan also never experienced a match against England, Manchester United, Rapid Vienna, and Rosario Central (Argentina). That lack of experience made him a player that had a long lasting career.
In 1973, he was 1st selected for the Indonesian national team, for whom he played as a defender until 1980.
He made his debut on 19 April 1974 at Senayan Stadium against an Uruguay side led by Juan Silva and Fernando Morena, but not fielding there core players. Indonesia won the match 2-1.

At that time, Harhara managed to shut down the movement of Fernando Morena and Juan Silva, making it difficult to penetrate the Indonesia's defense.
Sutan also played against Denmark national team. At that time managed to defeat their star player Alan Simonsen. At that time, Indonesia massacred Denmark's national team by a score of 9-0. This is the biggest defeat in the history of the national team before the record was broken at the time of the Indonesian national team won Bahrain national team by a score of 10-0.
For the 1st time, Indonesia participated in the 1977 SEA Games held in Kuala Lumpur. In this tournament, Indonesia was favored to win because the Indonesia national team has won at the tournament level in Southeast Asia.
Indonesia joined in Group A along with Malaysia, Philippines, and Brunei. The result is Indonesia managed to win 2 times and 1 time in series.
In the semifinal match, the referee Omar Othman Indonesia proved to be violent in a game against Thailand. When the score was still 1-1. Finally on 60 minutes, the match referee had to stop and then establish Thailand as the winner and they automatically advanced to the finals.
At the national team debut in the SEA Games, he managed to bring the team to the final round of the game after the play-off defeat Thailand via a penalty shootout 3-1.
There are five participating countries so that there is no division of the group. Participating countries include: Burma, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore. Indonesia only won 2 times, 1 time series, and 1 defeat.
In the finals, Indonesia met with Malaysia. The game was fierce and both teams played the best game. Finally at 21 minutes, Malaysia managed to make a beautiful goal by Mokhtar Dahari that cannot be anticipated by Ronny Paslah. The score stayed the same until the game ended.
So since that time, Malaysia became the mortal enemy of Indonesia. They always met in the final of the championship in Southeast Asia. They are always competing to be the master of football in Southeast Asia.
No less interesting, Sutan has his own style, which he applies in every game. He was an admirer of football and in 1974 joined the Dutch national team. As a wing defender, he actively helped the attacks. When his team attacked, he quickly located the opponent's weakness. Frequently the attack came from the strength of his speed in the game. Even so, he never forgot to defend his team to ensure safety.
