Gita has been synonymously identified with some of the most significant transactions in Indonesia over the past decade, specifically in the areas of telecommunications. As an investment banker, he advised on a number of transactions such as the Singtel acquisition of the wireless subsidiary of state owned incumbent P.T Telkom, Telkomsel; STT's acquisition of the No 2 telecommunications service provider P.T Indosat and subsequently the sale of STT's stake in P.T Indosat to Qtel. Gita is also credited with helping facilitate Etisalat Telecommunications entry into the Indonesian market when it bought a 16% stake in wireless service provider P.T Excelkomindo from Peter Sondakh.
After serving for nearly 2 years as the chairman of Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board or Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal, Gita was appointed by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to take a new role as the new trade minister replacing Mari Elka Pangestu. As BKPM chairman, he was known for his ability to leverage his relationships internationally to help promote international investment into the Indonesian economy and help create the appropriate frameworks and policies to help increased transparency and safe guard foreign investments in the Indonesian economy.
Gita has a bachelor degree in Accounting from University of Texas, Master of Business Administration from Baylor University, and Master of Public Administration from the Harvard University's JFK School of Government. He also held both CPA and CFA charterholder. Apart from that, he is an avid music lover and a single handicap golfer. Gita is funding the promotion of youth golf in Indonesia in the hopes of finding a new generation of sportsman to represent the country internationally in the game.
